Pre-Treatment and Post-Treatment Instructions

Treatment Preparation and Recovery

Below you’ll find both pre-treatment and post-treatment instructions for the services offered at Refinery Aesthetics + Wellness. Use these resources to prepare for your visit and support optimal recovery. If you have questions or need personalized guidance, our team is always happy to help.

Wrinkle Relaxers

  • At Refinery Aesthetics + Wellness we suggest you:

    1. Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements

      • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, or vitamin E for at least 3–5 days before your appointment. These can increase the risk of bruising.

    2. Refrain from alcohol

      • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment to reduce the chance of bruising.

    3. Stay hydrated

      • Proper hydration helps decrease the risk of post‑treatment headaches.

    4. Arrive with a clean, makeup‑free face

      • This allows your provider to assess skin and perform treatment safely.

    5. Check skin condition

      • Ensure the treatment area is free of active infections, rashes, or cold sores.

    6. Share your medical and cosmetic history

      • Inform your provider of any recent cosmetic procedures or relevant medical conditions.

    7. Report cold sore history

      • If you have a history of cold sores or are prone to them, let your provider know. Pre‑treatment antiviral medication may be recommended.

    8. Disclose pregnancy, breastfeeding, or neuromuscular disorders

      • Neurotoxins may not be suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neuromuscular disorder. Please inform your provider of any of these conditions.

Following these steps will help you achieve the safest, most effective results from your treatment at Refinery Aesthetics + Wellness.

  • Post-Treatment Instructions for Neurotoxin Injections

After receiving neurotoxin injections (such as Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or Jeuveau), it’s important to follow proper aftercare to ensure optimal results.

    1. Avoid rubbing, touching, or applying pressure to the treated areas for at least 24 hours to prevent the neurotoxin from spreading to unintended muscles.

    2. Refrain from strenuous exercise, saunas, or hot tubs for the rest of the day, as heat and increased blood flow can reduce effectiveness.

    3. Stay upright for 4 hours post-treatment and avoid lying down or bending over excessively.

What to expect after Neurotoxin Injections.

    1. Some mild redness, swelling, or small bumps at the injection sites are normal and usually subside within a few hours.

    2. Results typically start to become noticeable within 3-5 days, with full effects appearing at 10-14 days.

    3. The effects of neurotoxins usually last 3-4 months, and regular treatments can help maintain a smooth and refreshed appearance.

    4. Bruising can occur with injections, if it does occur we recommend lightly icing the area.

    5. It is recommended that you follow up in 2 weeks to review results, take your after photos, and adjust dosage if needed.

If you experience any unusual side effects, such as difficulty swallowing or breathing, contact your provider immediately.

BioStimulators

  • Sculptra is a biostimulatory injectable treatment that gradually restores facial volume and improves skin texture by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production. Results appear subtly and progressively over several months. To maximize your results and ensure a smooth recovery, please follow these pre- and post-care instructions.

    Pre-Treatment Instructions

    Avoid Blood Thinners & Supplements:

    • Stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements (unless medically necessary) 5–7 days prior to treatment. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, vitamin E, fish oil, ginkgo biloba, garlic, and St. John’s Wort.

    • Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours prior to your appointment to minimize bruising risk.

    Avoid Other Treatments:

    • Avoid laser, chemical peel, or microneedling treatments for at least 1 week prior to Sculptra.

    • Avoid neurotoxin or filler injections in the same area within 2 weeks of your appointment.

    Health Considerations:

    • Notify your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a history of keloid scarring, autoimmune conditions, or active skin infections.

    • If you are prone to cold sores, an antiviral may be prescribed to reduce risk of an outbreak.

    Day of Treatment:

    • Arrive with clean skin—no makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or oils.

    • Eat a light meal and hydrate well before your appointment.

    • Discontinue retinoids and exfoliating agents for 2–3 days prior.

  • Immediately After Treatment:

    • Expect mild swelling, redness, or bruising at injection sites. This is temporary and should resolve within a few days.

    • Apply a cold compress intermittently (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off) for the first 24 hours to minimize swelling and bruising.

    • Avoid makeup for 24 hours.

    • Do not massage, rub, or manipulate treated areas unless instructed.

    The 5-5-5 Rule for Massage:

    • Massage the treated area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days after each treatment session.

    • This helps evenly distribute Sculptra and promotes smooth collagen production.

    • Use clean hands and gentle, circular motions with light pressure.

    Activity Restrictions:

    • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and steam rooms for 24–48 hours.

    • Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, aspirin) for 48 hours unless prescribed.

    • Sleep with your head elevated the first night to reduce swelling.

    Skincare & Sun Protection:

    • Avoid applying makeup or skincare products for 24 hours post-treatment.

    • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer.

    • Protect your skin with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily.

    • Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and heat exposure for at least 3 days.

    Healing & Results:

    • Sculptra works gradually; results will develop over 4–6 weeks as collagen builds.

    • A series of 2–4 treatments, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, is typically recommended for optimal results.

    • Final results can last up to 2 years with maintenance treatments.

    Follow-Up Care:

    • Mild tenderness or small nodules under the skin may occur and typically resolve with gentle massage.

    • Contact the clinic if you experience significant pain, redness, heat, or swelling that worsens after 48 hours.

Derma Fillers

  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers
Juvederm • Restylane • RHA Collection

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers are injectable treatments designed to restore volume, smooth fine lines, and enhance facial contours for a more youthful appearance. To prepare for your treatment, Refinery Aesthetics + Wellness recommends the following guidelines.

    Before Your Appointment

    • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) for at least 5–7 days to minimize bruising and swelling.

    • Refrain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to treatment.

    • Stay well-hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment.

    • Arrive with a clean, makeup-free face.

    Medical Considerations

    • If you have a history of cold sores, inform your provider—preventive antiviral medication may be recommended.

    Scheduling Advice

    • Avoid booking filler treatment immediately before major events; mild swelling or bruising can occur.

Proper preparation helps ensure a safe procedure and the best possible results. If you have any questions or specific medical concerns, please contact Refinery Aesthetics + Wellness before your appointment.

  • After receiving HA (hyaluronic acid) fillers—such as Juvederm, Restylane, or the RHA Collection—proper aftercare is key to achieving the best results. Follow these simple guidelines for confidence and peace of mind after your treatment.

    Post-Treatment Expectations

    • Mild swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising around the injection sites are normal and typically resolve within a few days.

    • You may feel small lumps under the skin at first; these usually soften and settle as the filler integrates into the tissue.

    • Full results are typically visible within 1–2 weeks.

    First 24–48 Hours

    • To reduce swelling: apply a cold compress gently for 10 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours.

    • Avoid touching, massaging, or applying pressure to the treated areas unless instructed by your provider.

    • Refrain from strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat (saunas, hot tubs) for 24–48 hours.

    Daily Care

    • You may wear makeup the next day; keep your skincare routine gentle and avoid aggressive exfoliation or strong active ingredients until healed.

    • Oral and/or topical arnica may help reduce bruising and swelling.

When to Contact Refinery Aesthetics + Wellness

    • Seek immediate care if you experience severe pain, increasing redness, skin discoloration (such as blanching or a dusky appearance), or any signs of infection—these may indicate a serious complication.

    • It is recommended to schedule a 2-week follow-up if this is your first filler treatment or if you have any concerns.

Our promise Your safety and satisfaction are our top priorities. We are here to support you through your healing process—please contact Refinery Aesthetics + Wellness with any questions or concerns.

Thread Lifts

  • PDO Max Thread Lifts are a minimally invasive treatment that helps lift and tighten the skin using dissolvable polydioxanone (PDO) threads. These threads stimulate collagen production to improve firmness and elasticity over time. For the best results and a smooth recovery, please follow the pre- and post-treatment instructions below carefully.

    Pre-Treatment Instructions

    Avoid Medications & Supplements:

    • Stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements (unless prescribed by your doctor) for at least 5–7 days before treatment. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), vitamin E, fish oil, ginkgo biloba, and St. John’s Wort.

    • Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours prior to your appointment to reduce bruising.

     Avoid Certain Treatments:

    • Refrain from dental procedures, laser treatments, and facial massages for at least 2 weeks before your appointment.

    • Do not schedule filler or neurotoxin injections in the treatment area within 2 weeks prior to PDO thread lift.

     Health Considerations:

    • If you are prone to cold sores, notify your provider. An antiviral may be prescribed prior to your treatment.

    • If you have any active skin infections, cold sores, acne breakouts, or open wounds in the treatment area, please reschedule until healed.

     Day of Treatment:

    • Arrive with a clean face—no makeup, moisturizer, or sunscreen.

    • Eat a light meal and stay hydrated before your appointment.

    • Avoid caffeine or stimulants on the day of your procedure.

  • Post-Treatment Instructions

    Immediately After Treatment:

    • Mild swelling, tenderness, or bruising is normal and should subside within a few days.

    • Do not touch, rub, or massage the treated area for at least 24 hours.

    • Avoid excessive facial movements for the first 24–48 hours.

    • Apply a cold compress if needed to reduce swelling (10–15 minutes at a time).

    Activity Restrictions:

    • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and steam rooms for 5–7 days.

    • Sleep on your back with your head elevated for 3–5 nights to prevent pressure on treated areas.

    • Avoid dental work for 2–3 weeks following the procedure.

    • Avoid facial massages or facials for at least 2–3 weeks.

    Skincare & Medications:

    • Avoid applying makeup or skincare products for 24 hours unless directed by your provider.

    • Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, aspirin) for 48 hours unless medically necessary.

    • You may use Tylenol (acetaminophen) for discomfort.

    • Keep the area clean and avoid direct sun exposure for 1 week.

    Healing Process:

    • You may feel slight tightness, pulling, or mild asymmetry for several weeks as threads settle—this is normal.

    • Results will gradually improve over 2–3 months as collagen builds around the threads.

    • Most threads dissolve naturally within 6–9 months, with continued collagen stimulation.

    Follow-Up Care:

    • A follow-up visit is recommended in 1–2 weeks to ensure proper healing and optimal results.

    • Contact the clinic if you experience excessive pain, visible thread exposure, or signs of infection (redness, warmth, drainage).

Chemical Peels

  • Your safety and results matter to us! Please follow the instructions below to prepare for your upcoming peel treatment.

    1. General Skin Prep

    • Avoid sun exposure: Do not use tanning beds or intentionally tan for at least 2 weeks before your treatment. Always wear SPF 30+ daily.

    • Stop exfoliating products: Discontinue use of scrubs, retinols (Retin-A, tretinoin, adapalene, etc.), glycolic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or any other exfoliating/topical acne treatments for 5–7 days prior.

    • Pause waxing or hair removal: Do not wax, sugar, thread, or use depilatories on the treatment area for 5 days before. Shaving should be avoided for 24 hours before.

    • Avoid other procedures: Do not schedule facials, microneedling, laser treatments, or injectable treatments (Botox, fillers, etc.) within 1 week before your peel.

    2. Medications & Health Considerations

    • Antibiotics or acne medications: If you are on oral or topical antibiotics, isotretinoin (Accutane), or similar, please notify us. Some medications require a longer wait before peels.

    • Cold sores/fever blisters: If you have a history of cold sores, let us know. An antiviral medication may be prescribed to prevent an outbreak.

    • Medical conditions: Inform your provider of any recent illness, open cuts, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis in the treatment area.

    3. 48 Hours Before Your Peel

    • Avoid intense workouts, saunas, hot tubs, or anything that may cause excessive sweating/overheating.

    • Avoid alcohol consumption, which can increase skin sensitivity.

    • Pause the use of harsh or new skincare products (especially those with strong active ingredients).

    4. Day of Treatment

    • Come with clean skin (no makeup, lotions, perfumes, or deodorants in the treatment area).

    • Men: Shave the day before, not the morning of your peel.

    • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area.

    5. Important Notes

    • Pregnant or breastfeeding? Peels are not recommended.

    • Results vary: Multiple treatments are often recommended for best results (especially for Epionce Peel System: Sal-E & Mal-E).

    • Your skin may feel more sensitive leading up to your appointment—this is normal.

Following these instructions ensures your peel is safe and effective.

Failure to follow may result in rescheduling your treatment.

  • Following a chemical peel, your skin will be sensitive and require gentle care to promote healing and achieve the best results.

What to Expect After Your Chemical Peel:

    ● Immediate Effects: Redness, tightness, and mild swelling are normal for the first 24-48 hours.

    ● Peeling: Light flaking or peeling typically begins within 2-5 days, depending on the peel depth.

    ● Healing Time: Skin will gradually reveal a smoother, more radiant complexion over 7-14 days.

How to Care for Your Skin After a Chemical Peel:

    ● Keep Skin Moisturized: Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to soothe dryness and peeling.

    ● No Picking or Peeling: Allow the skin to shed naturally—picking can cause scarring or pigmentation.

    ● Avoid Heat & Sweating: Skip saunas, hot tubs, and strenuous workouts for 48 hours.

    ● Sun Protection: Wear SPF 30+ daily and avoid direct sun exposure, as your skin is more vulnerable to damage.

    ● Gentle Skincare: Use only mild, non-exfoliating cleansers and avoid active ingredients (retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C) until your provider advises.

    ● No Makeup for 24 Hours: Let your skin breathe immediately post-treatment.

    • The insertion site may be uncomfortable for up to 2 to 3 weeks. If there is itching or redness you may take Benadryl for relief, 50mg. orally every 6 hours. Caution this can cause drowsiness!

    • You may experience bruising, swelling, and/or redness of the insertion site which may last from a few days up to 2 to 3 weeks.

    • You may notice some pinkish or bloody discoloration of the outer bandage. this is normal.

Nitrous Oxide

    1. Medical History and Medications

      • Inform your provider of any changes in your medical history since your last visit (e.g., new diagnoses, recent hospitalizations, or pregnancy).

      • Provide an updated list of all medications (prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and supplements).

      • Notify your provider if you are taking any blood thinners or have any respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD).

    2. Fasting Guidelines

      • In most cases, you do not need to fast for nitrous oxide; however, each provider’s policy may differ. Some may recommend refraining from heavy meals or large amounts of liquids for 2 hours prior to your appointment.

      • If you are unsure about the need to fast, clarify this with your provider.

    3. Clothing and Comfort

      • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment.

      • Avoid tight collars or clothing that could restrict your breathing.

    4. Alcohol and Smoking

      • Refrain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours before the procedure.

      • Avoid smoking or recreational drugs prior to treatment, as they can affect your body’s response to sedation.

    5. Transportation

      • Nitrous oxide usually wears off quickly, and most patients can drive themselves home. However, if your provider anticipates additional sedation or if you experience prolonged drowsiness, you may need someone to drive you.

      • Check in advance with your provider regarding any specific requirements for transportation.

    6. Communication with Provider

      • Discuss any allergies, especially those related to latex or anesthesia.

      • If you experience severe anxiety or a fear of medical procedures, let your provider know so that they can address your concerns and adjust sedation accordingly.

Disclaimer: These instructions are general guidelines. Your healthcare provider may give additional or modified instructions based on your individual health conditions, procedure type, and response to nitrous oxide. Always follow your provider’s specific directions to ensure a safe and comfortable treatment experience.

    1. Recovery Period

      • After the procedure, you will typically breathe 100% oxygen for several minutes to flush the nitrous oxide from your system.

      • You may feel slightly lightheaded or “floaty” immediately afterward. This should subside within minutes.

    2. Observation

      • In most cases, you can leave shortly after the procedure once the healthcare provider confirms that you are stable and alert.

      • If you feel dizzy or nauseated, inform the staff so they can assist you and monitor your condition.

    3. Resuming Activities

      • Generally, you can resume normal daily activities, including driving, unless advised otherwise by your provider.

      • If you are receiving additional sedation (e.g., oral or IV sedation alongside nitrous oxide), you may be asked to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery for a designated period.

    4. Eating and Drinking

      • Unless advised otherwise, you can usually return to your normal diet once the effects of nitrous oxide have worn off.

      • Start with light meals if you experience any residual nausea.

    5. Potential Side Effects

      • You may experience mild nausea, headache, or fatigue. These effects are typically short-lived and should improve on their own.

      • If discomfort persists or worsens, contact your healthcare provider.

    6. Follow-Up Care

      • Follow any additional instructions specific to the procedure you had (e.g., dental work or minor surgical procedure).

      • Schedule and attend any recommended follow-up appointments.

    7. When to Seek Medical Advice

      • Contact your healthcare provider if you experience prolonged drowsiness, vomiting, severe headache, or any other unexpected or concerning symptoms after treatment.

    8. Lifestyle Considerations

      • Avoid alcohol or recreational drugs for at least 24 hours following nitrous oxide sedation.

      • If you have underlying health conditions, continue to follow your usual medication and management plan unless directed otherwise.

DISCLAIMER: These instructions are general guidelines. Your healthcare provider may give additional or modified instructions based on your individual health conditions, procedure type, and response to nitrous oxide. Always follow your provider’s specific directions to ensure a safe and comfortable treatment experience.
